Dear Dr. Hoang Duc Thao, what’s your feeling now when you are honoured to receive Vietnamese Talent Award in the field of Science and Technology?

Dr. Hoang Duc Thao: I am very happy, greatly respect and appreciate when I am selected and awarded by Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association; the Study Encouragement Society; the People’s newspaper, the Science Council and the Organization Board. On this occasion, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the organizations and individuals creating such a prestigious Vietnam Talent Award.

It is said that you graduated from the field which is not much relating to science and technology. So where did the idea come from making you research the theme of precast reinforced concrete technical trenches for cable and piping distribution?

I used to be an apprentice and a worker. I finished the Architecture programs of Ha Noi Architectural University but I did not make graduation scheme, so I did not receive a degree and obviously I am not an architect. Research of the theme of precast reinforced concrete technical trenches for cable and piping distribution originated from the technological achievements of manufacturing precast reinforced concrete equipments with thin walls including this product used in the construction of urban and rural infrastructure and environmental protection as well as anti-change of climate. In addition, the research of precast reinforced concrete technical trenches for cable and piping distribution originated from the urban landscape, from urgent requirements of synchronizing urban infrastructure, the effectiveness of investment and operation costs and the reform of administrative procedures in construction...

You have definitely faced many difficulties when you approached the field of science and technology. Can you share with us some difficulties you got and how did you solve those difficulties?

The greatest difficulty is the output of the products. We are not subject to be allocated the budget for scientific research, so we must have self-control and self-reliance, we have to use the revenues to cover the expenses and balance them. In order to solve this problem, for every research, we have to think of the applicability. Only when our products are accepted and applied by users, we can cover costs and re-invest. For this reason, the research has to be derived from the real demands and it can solve the practical urgencies, this means the researched products must be applied, the income can cover the cost and can continue to research for application.

Today, many young people are afraid of following scientific research field, even the field of applied science. In your opinion, do you know why and how can you do to find the passion for this avenue of research?

There are many causes obstruct the scientific research. However, I think one of the essential causes is lack of the courage, confidence and the passion for scientific research has not reach the level of excess over them. When they passionate, they will be attracted without resisting. That is the Karma making us have to do as it our mission. The scientific research also requires the sacrifice and dedication
